Vitamin B12, also known as Cyanocobalamin is water soluble, the most complex vitamin and is destroyed by heavy metals and by strong oxidizing and reducing agents. It is the only natural occurring organic compound that contains cobalt. Vitamin B12 plays a very important role in the activation of amino acids during protein formation, and in the anaerobic degradation of the amino acid lysine. Cyanocobalamin with other B vitamins plays an important role in the manufacture of neurotransmitters, chemicals that facilitate communication between nerves.
